"Abstract:\nStoring water has long been a cornerstone of socio-economic development, particularly for societies exposed to large climatic variability. Nature has always supplied the bulk of water storage on earth, but built storage has increased significantly, particularly over the twentieth century. Today, numerous countries suffer from water storage gaps and increasingly variable precipitation, threatening sustainable development and even societal stability. There is a growing need to develop more storage types and manage existing storage better. At the same time, the policy, engineering, and scientific communities may not fully recognize the extent of these storage gaps and how best to manage them. There are large and uncertain costs and benefits of different types of storage and developing storage can be risky and controversial. Although there is consensus that built and natural storage are fundamentally complementary, there is still no pragmatic agenda to guide future integrated water storage development.\n&nbsp;\nThis project argues that water storage should be recognized as a service rather than only a facility. More than volumes of water stored behind a dam or in a watershed, what ultimately matters are the ability to provide different services at a particular time and place with a given level of assurance. Integrated storage systems should be developed and managed to deliver a targeted service standard. This will reduce the costs of new storage development and make the benefits more sustainable.&nbsp;\n&nbsp;\nThis project documents demonstrate, there are numerous data gaps pertaining to water storage, as well as a need for greater clarity on some key concepts. This paper does not introduce new data or research but rather provides a review of some of the current knowledge and issues around water storage, and outlines a new, integrated and constructive water storage agenda for the decades to come."

"The program comprises several interlinked initiatives to support countries to navigate the following three stages, as included in the IWRM Acceleration Package.\n&nbsp;\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stage 1 &ndash; Identify challenges: Strengthen SDGs integration, national monitoring and reporting frameworks, including the establishment of a baseline for SDG indicator 6.5.1, with a view to identifying critical areas for attention.\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stage 2 &ndash; Develop Action Plan: Assist countries in formulating appropriate IWRM responses in the form of Action Plan to water resources management challenges in the context of the SDG baselines and national water resources management priority issues more broadly.\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stage 3 &ndash; Implement solutions: Support countries in implementing IWRM solutions, in the form of Action Plan, aimed at achieving SDG 6 and other water-related goals.\n&nbsp;\nThe main objective of the activity is to develop an IWRM Action Plan for Bangladesh that is complementary to the existing framework for IWRM, under Stage 2 of the SDG 6 IWRM Support Program. These will help the stakeholders to achieve and address the four dimensions of SDG 6.5.1 by preparing a framework. However, to achieve the main objective, some specific objectives are set as follows.\n&nbsp;\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To identify the roadmap to achieve the way forward from the updated status of SDG 6.5.1 that has been done in 2020 in Bangladesh.\n&nbsp;\n&middot;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;To ensure in consultation with all the main stakeholders, a robust shared vision to achieve the expected targets of implementing IWRM as encapsulated in the IWRM Action Plan.\n&nbsp;\n&middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To set an appropriate timeline and roadmap for implementation, clarify roles and responsibilities and identify funding sources for the selected actions of the Action Plan."

Action Plan to Improve IWRM Implementation of SDG 6.5.1 in Bangladesh

"The Ganges- Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) basin is the transboundary river basin that has a total area of over 1.7 million sq. km, distributed between India, China, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. The South Asian Regional Water Partnership of GWP took the initiative to further strengthen the common transboundary river basin by harnessing potential mutual benefit-sharing opportunities such as navigation routes, hydroelectricity generation, flood management, etc. This primarily focused on potential initiatives for enhanced common river management on a basin scale concerning past initiatives. This enabled the simultaneous assessment of &ldquo;where we stand&rdquo; in terms of current modes and practices in effect in devising the &ldquo;where we want to be&rdquo; in the future. In this context, a stocktaking report on the Ganges and Brahmaputra Basin was jointly produced by GWP Bangladesh, GWP India, and GWP Nepal. Each analysis report contributed to clarify the overall situation&nbsp;analysis of transboundary water governance within the&nbsp;Ganges-Brahmaputra basin in South Asia and to identify GWP South Asia&rsquo;s entry points for GBM river basin management.&nbsp;The report was documented in 2022 with the cooperation of BWP&rsquo;s technical partner CEGIS."

Beyond Core Activities

"Co-organizing the Conference IPWE 2023 with the Cooperation of IWFM, BUET\nThe 11th International Perspective on the Water Resources and the Environment (IPWE) Conference was held from January 4-6, 2023 in Dhaka, Bangladesh and BWP was one of the Local Organizing Committee members. BWP supported the Environmental and Water Resources Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE-EWRI) and BUET-IWFM to organize the event.\nInception Workshop 2023 on Built Water Storage in South Asia\nTo inaugurate the &ldquo;Built Water Storage in South Asia to enhance water security in the region&rdquo; project, IWMI, and GWP SAS conducted an inception workshop on 28 January 2023 in Bangladesh which was organized by BWP and CEGIS jointly.&nbsp;\nMoU Signing Ceremony between BWP and IWFM\nA mutual understanding is reached between the two parties, BWP and IWFM, BUET, and as a result of this a MoU is made on the day of 20th February, 2023 between BWP, and IWFM and signed with the presence of senior members from both the institutions."

"Consultation Workshop on Development of Action Plan for SDG 6.5.1 (IWRM Implementation) Indicator in Bangladesh\nThe consultation workshop on &ldquo;Development of Action Plan for SDG 6.5.1 (IWRM Implementation) Indicator in Bangladesh&rdquo; was held on 31 March 2022. The workshop was held in the conference room of Pani Bhaban (level-5), Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).\nYouth and Gender Capacity Enhancement to Improve Sustainable Water Management, Climate Change Adaptation Including WASH through Schools\nBWP directed a youth and gender capacity enhancement program with the cooperation of the BWP&rsquo;s partner organization named Reach to Unreached (RUN), which facilitated students of high school to interact with their classmates on IWRM, understanding climate change and its impact, and learn about students&rsquo; role to protect water resources. The program was conducted from 3 July to 5 July 2022 in the selected schools.\nTraining on IWRM for Women Professionals\nBWP organized a one-day training on &ldquo;Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) for Women Professionals&rdquo; in cooperation with Bangladesh Women and Water Network (BWWN) on August 13, 2022 at the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) XEN conference room, LGED Bhaban, Agargaon, Dhaka."

"IWRM Workshop for Women Professionals\nA one-day workshop was organized by BWP on 4 December 2021 in Dhaka in cooperation with EPRC. The aim of the workshop was to enhance participants&rsquo; knowledge and understanding of the benefits of integrating gender meaningfully through IWRM practices."

"Workshop on &ldquo;Empowerment of Youth &amp; Women and Strengthening on the Sustainable Water Management: Future Prospective\nBWP organized the workshop (virtually) in association with EPRC, a partner organization of BWP, on 28 Nov 2020. It was a half-day long online workshop with women professionals in the water sector.\nData Survey and Stakeholder Workshops on SDGs Indicator 6.5.1\nConsultations were conducted by BWP in collaboration with the&nbsp;Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) under the guidance of the GWPO and the UNEP. implemented the project &ldquo;Data Survey and Stakeholder Workshops on SDGs Indicator 6.5.1&rdquo; in 2020. The main objective of the initiative was to assess the degree of integrated water resources management (IWRM) implementation, by assessing the four key components of IWRM.\nBaseline Survey on Youth and Young Water Professionals (YYWP)\nIn 2020, the BWP conducted the baseline survey on YYWP in association with the CEGIS, a partner organization of BWP. It was an additional project assigned by the GWPO. The objective of the survey was to provide regional baseline local data on the status of the youth environment that will support and complement the development of the Youth and Young Water Professional Platform of Bangladesh and South Asia."

"Capacity Building Training on Climate Change Adaptation in the Water Sector\nTo understand climate change better and to explain related frameworks, tools, and techniques to facilitate the planning and designing of community-based adaptation projects in the water sector of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Water Partnership (BWP) has implemented a Capacity Building Training on &ldquo;Climate Change Adaptation in the Water Sector\" in association with CEGIS, a partner organization of BWP, under GWP Funded WACREP project. It was a 5-day-long training program starting from 8 Dec&rsquo; to 12 Dec&rsquo; 2019 at the CEGIS training room.\nMoU signed with Syngenta for the project &ldquo;Introducing Water-Efficient Technologies (IWET) to Barind tract&rdquo; which is a part of the Barind Agri-Water Multi-Stakeholder Platform (MSP), funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation\nThe First Addendum to the 2018 agreement between&nbsp; BWP and Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture Bangladesh (SFSA Bangladesh) continues our joint water project. BWP and SFSA Bangladesh now head into their second year &ldquo;Introducing Water-Efficient Technologies (IWET) to Barind tract&rdquo;. This forms part of the Barind Agri-Water Multi-Stakeholder Platform (MSP), funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation. The partnership provided about $267,000 to SFSA Bangladesh for supplying, testing, and introducing suitable water-efficient techniques for mango orchards and paddy fields in the dry Rajshahi division.&nbsp;<a href=\"https://dascoh.org/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DASCOH Foundation</a> was the implementing partner.&nbsp;\n3rd World Irrigation Forum (WIF), in Bali, Indonesia: Powerful Alliance: Multi-stakeholders Platform (MSP) contributions on food and water security processes in Asia\nDr Khondaker Azharul Haq represented GWP South Asia at the Side Event 7 on Powerful Alliance: MSP contributions on food and water security processes in Asia held on 3 September at the 3rd World Irrigation Forum (WIF), in Bali, Indonesia."

"Workshop on Technical Feasibility, Economic Viability, and Social Acceptance of Solar Powered Pumps for Irrigation and Drinking Water Supply&nbsp;\nA workshop on technical feasibility, economic viability, and social acceptance of solar-powered pumps for irrigation and drinking water supply was organized by BWP in collaboration with Global Water Partnership &ndash; South Asia. The main goals of this workshop were to identify the reasons that could potentially be holding back the expansion of solar-powered pumps and the ways forward to change the current rather stalemate scenario.\nKnowledge Exchange Workshop on South Asia Drought Monitoring System (SADMS) in the Drought Prone Areas of Bangladesh\nIWMI/GWP developed the South Asian Drought Monitoring System (SADMS) to monitor the drought severity monthly and fortnightly and event daily. Further, the SADMS model has the options for drought severity index calculation using the outputs from satellite images. Following up on the Delhi Workshop, BWP organized the &ldquo;Knowledge Exchange Workshop on SADMS in the Drought Prone Areas of Bangladesh&rdquo; on 13 December 2019 at Hotel Rigs Inn, Gulshan-1, Dhaka, Bangladesh with technical assistance from CEGIS. The workshop is aimed at disseminating the benefit of SADMS for further implementation in drought-prone areas of Bangladesh.\nEnhancing Knowledge and Building Awareness of Youth about Sustainable Safe Water Management and Climate Change Adaptation\nThe objective of the study is to improve knowledge and enhance awareness of school youths focusing on gender response to climate change adaptation towards sustainable water management. On behalf of BWP, the program was implemented by EPRC, a partner organization of BWP.\nStrengthening Bangladesh Women and Water Network (BWWN)\nTo find challenges, opportunities, and women professionals&rsquo; involvement in the water sector, a workshop on &ldquo;Challenges in Water Sector and Opportunities for Women Professionals&rdquo; was held jointly with BWP and BWWN on 22nd December 2018 at the Conference Room-1in Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC), Dhaka.\nStudy on Ground Water Sustainability assessment for the Greater Dhaka Watershed area \nBangladesh Water Partnership in association with Water Resources Group 2030 with financial support from H&amp;M, worlds one of the leading Apparel and Fashion brands, has been commissioned to conduct a preliminary ground water sustainability projection for the Greater Dhaka Watershed Area.&nbsp;\nSample Baseline Survey of Household Sanitation Facilities in Gazipur District\nA baseline survey of Household Sanitation Facilities was organized by Bangladesh Water Partnership with the help of 2030 Water Resources Group, World Bank in Gazipur District.&nbsp;"

"Multi-Stakeholder Workshop on &ldquo;Valuing Water Initiative&rdquo; held in Dhaka\nBWP organized a multi-stakeholder workshop titled &ldquo;Valuing Water Initiative&rdquo; on the occasion of UN-WB High Level Panel meeting in Dhaka on 31 July 2017.\nToT Course on Concept and Practice on Integrated Water Resources Management\nBWP, in association with its partner organization Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS), organized a 5-day long Training of Trainers (ToT) course on &ldquo;Concept and Practice of Integrated Water Resources Management&rdquo; from 16th to 20th April 2017 in Dhaka.\nImproving Knowledge and Building Awareness on Gender-sensitive Safe Water Management and Climate Change Adaptation through Secondary School Students\nThe activity was carried out under the initiative and in collaboration with district and sub-district education officers and school teachers.\nConsultation with the Grassroots Level Community on their Understanding and Approach regarding Adaptation to Climate Change\nThe consultations were organized with communities who have been suffering from drinking water scarcity and water logging. A total of six (06) community consultations were organized in different Wards of Khulna City Corporation.\nPilot study conducted on &lsquo;Empowering Young Women through Rainwater Harvesting System for Homestead Eco Farming, Drinking Water Supply and Help to Generate Entrepreneurship&rsquo;.\nBWP implemented the project in association with its partner organization Voice of South Bangladesh (VoSB) in Bagerhat district (a southwest coastal region of Bangladesh) in September 2017.\nInternational Women&rsquo;s Day 2017 Celebrated\nOn 12 March 2017, BWP celebrated the International Women&rsquo;s Day in the premises of its secretariat with the Bangladesh Women and Water Network (BWWN) with the slogan &ldquo;Be Bold For Change&rdquo;.\nCelebrating the World Water Day 2017\nThe Bangladesh Water Partnership celebrated the World Water Day 2017 through a number of events both centrally and locally in association with its partner organizations.\nWorld Environment Day 2017 Observed in Barishal\nIn order to create awareness and underline the importance of the Environment Day under the theme &ldquo;Connecting People to Nature&rdquo;, BWP organized a workshop jointly with its partner organizations in Barisal district on 12th June 2017.\nComputation of Crop specific drought Index\nThe study conducted in association with CEGIS focused on crop specific drought assessment and management at Tanore upazila under Rajshahi district.\nEnsuring Sustainable Access to Water Supply in the Coastal Area of Bangladesh\nThe broad objective of the study was to explore the challenges of sustainable access to water for water related livelihoods, drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, and adaptation practices with respect to climate change in the coastal zone with a focus on women and youth and to solicit suggestions and recommendations for ensuring sustainable access to water supply."

"Capacity Building Training on Climate Change Adaptation\nIn association with IWM, BWP organized this 7-day training program from 19 to 29 March 2015. The training was held at the IWM training facilities. It was attended by 10 mid-level professionals from different organizations.\n&nbsp;\nWorld Water Day Observation\nBangladesh National Committee of ICID (BANCID) observed the World Water Day 2015 and held a seminar on the theme &ldquo;Water and Sustainable Development&rdquo; on 22 March 2015 at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council Auditorium, Dhaka. The event was organized jointly by MoWR, BWDB, CEGIS, IWM and BWP.\n&nbsp;\nWorld Environmental Celebration in Khulna, Chittagong and Dhaka\nBWP in association with Bhairab Area Water Partnership, Initiative for Right View (IRV), and Southwest Youth Water Forum observed World Environment Day on the theme &ldquo;7 billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with care&rdquo; on 4 June 2015. An open discussion and awareness-raising seminar with Youth and Community Beneficiaries was also held on 6 July 2015, organized by BWP in association with Halda Area Water Partnership in Chittagong. \n&nbsp;\nWorkshop on Climate Change Adaptation and Water Management\nA day-long workshop was organized by the Chitra Nabaganga Area Water Partnership in Narail District to discuss the findings of the study titled &ldquo;Building capacity about safe water management and climate change adaptation through local organizations and youths&rdquo; on 15 September 2015. The project was jointly implemented by the BWP and its partner organization, EPRC.\n&nbsp;\nRole of Women and Youth in Meeting Challenges of Drinking Water Security\nBWP, in association with its partner organization CEGIS, organized 2 workshops on the challenges of drinking water security in selected coastal polders and participation of youth and women in overcoming them. The workshops were held on 13 and 15 October in Khulna and Barisal divisions respectively.\n&nbsp;\nWorkshop on Awareness Raising and Capacity Building of Women\nBWP, in association with Bhairab Area Water Partnership and IRV, organized a day-long training workshop on awareness raising and capacity building of women on water management and environment conservation in the drinking water sector in selected Khulna slams on 11 November 2015.\n&nbsp;\nWorkshop on Safe Water and Improved Sanitation for Women\nWith the financial support of the BWP, BWWN organized a half-day workshop on &ldquo;Safe Water and Improved Sanitation Always Adds Value to the Women's Lifestyle&rdquo; on 14 November 2015 at the Department of Agricultural Extension Conference Room, Dhaka.\n&nbsp;\nWorkshop on Water Security and Urban Water Management\nBWP organized a day-long national workshop on 19 December 2015 titled Water Security and Urban Water Management for Building Climate Resilient, Sustainable, and Eco-friendly Cities/Towns. \n&nbsp;\nWorkshop on Feasibility Study of Climate Smart Village\nIn partnership with the CEGIS, BWP organized a national-level consultation on the feasibility study for establishing climate-smart villages in Bangladesh on 18 January 2015."

"Regional Workshop on Sharing Lessons and Experiences on Current Water Management Issues in South Asia\nA 2-day long regional workshop on &ldquo;Sharing Lessons and Experiences on Current Water Management Issues, Opportunities and Challenges from Deltaic Regions in South Asia, including Impending Climate Change Impacts&rdquo; was held in BRAC Centre, Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 28 and 29 March 2014. The workshop was organized by Bangladesh Water Partnership (BWP) in association with the partner organization Institute of Water Modelling (IWM) under the aegis of GWP SAS. The workshop was attended by more than 140 national and international participants.\nNational Consultation on the Sustainable Development Goal and Target for Water in the Post-2015 Development Agenda&ndash;Phase II\nThe national consultation was planned to obtain views from the participants on the post-2015 development agenda for water and sustainable development in the context of the national needs on 15 March 2014 at CIRDAP International Conference Centre, Dhaka. The consultation was a followup of the earlier consultation held in the year 2013 on water in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.\nTraining of Trainers (ToT) Course on Concept and Practice of IWRM\nBangladesh Water Partnership (BWP) in association with its partner organization Centre for Environment and Geographical Information System (CEGIS) organized a Training of Trainers (ToT) Course on &ldquo;Concept and Practice of Integrated Water Resources Management&rdquo; from 25 to 29 May 2014 in Dhaka. The main objective of course was to enhance the knowledge, experience and capacity building of water resources professionals about IWRM principles and practices for its implementation.\nTraining on Capacity Building for Climate Change Adaptation\nBangladesh Water Partnership in collaboration with Institute of Water Modelling (IWM) conducted a 5 day training program on &bdquo;Capacity Building for Climate Change Adaptation‟ from March 9-13, 2014. The aim of the training program was to increase awareness of the key critical issues related to the training theme\nClimate Change Adaptation at Community Level: The Role of Microfinance Institutions \nBangladesh Water Partnership in collaboration with the Institute of Microfinance organized a daylong seminar on November 15, 2014 titled &ldquo;Climate Change Adaptation at Community Level: The Role of MFIs&rdquo; at the PKSF Auditorium, PKSF Bhaban, Sher E Bangla Nagor, Agargaon, Dhaka. It was largely attended by over 200 participants from Government organizations, Academics, National experts in the field of microcredit, NGOs and senior officials working in the field of climate change adaptation and disaster management perspectives and Microfinance Institutes of the country.\nAssociated Program on Flood Management (APFM) with World Meteorological Organization (WMO)\nBangladesh Water Partnership in collaboration with its partner organization Institute of Water Modeling (IWM) organized a 2-day national workshop on &ldquo;Integrated Flood Management with a Focus on Costal Zones of Bangladesh: Development of a Pilot Project on Coastal Flood Management in Selected Areas of Bangladesh&rdquo; on 24-25 October 2014 in BRAC Centre Inn, Dhaka. More than 100 professionals from Government, Semi-Government, Autonomous bodies, NGOs, CBOs etc working in the coastal flood management participated.&nbsp;\nCapacity building of youth brigade in rural based secondary and primary schools on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)\nBangladesh Water Partnership (BWP) in collaboration with Gorai Area Water Partnership (GAWP) and Bangladesh Folklore Research Institute (BFRI) conducted an awareness campaign program among students of rural based secondary and primary schools on water Sanitation and hygiene (WASH). WASH program was undertaken from January to April 2014.\nPromoting Safe Water Management &amp; Climate Change Adaptation through Secondary Schools \nBangladesh Water Partnership in association with the partner organization Environment and Population Research Centre (EPRC) conducted a research study followed by a workshop on &ldquo;climate change impacts and its possible mitigation&rdquo; on 27 June 2014 at public library auditorium, Narail.&nbsp;\nNational dialogue for financing the investment programmes of the &ldquo;Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100‟ \nBangladesh Water Partnership in association with Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) organized a day long National Dialogue on &bdquo;Financing Mechanisms for Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100‟. The Dialogue was held on 1st November, 2014 in Spectra Convention Centre.\nCelebrating the World Water Day\nBangladesh Water Partnership jointly with Bangladesh National Committee of ICID (BANCID) observed the World Water Day 2014 and held a Seminar in this occasion on &ldquo;Water and Energy&rdquo; on 22 March, 2014.\nCelebrate World Environmental Day - 2014\nA daylong Seminar on Political Economy of Climate Change was organized on 19 June 2014 in the Daily Purbanchal Dialogue Center by Initiative for Right View and Bhairab River Area Water Partnership with the support of Bangladesh Water Partnership. Bangladesh Water Partnership (BWP) jointly with Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS), Department of Environment (DoE) celebrated the World Environment Day 2014 through an open discussion on 7 June, 2014 at Haymonti Auditorium, Department of Forest (DoF), Agargaon, Dhaka.&nbsp;\nConsultation Meeting With Climate Change National Focal Points to Develop Proposals Targeting for Climate Funding\nA National consultation meeting was organized by Bangladesh Water Partnership (BWP) on &ldquo;Climate Change National Focal Points to Develop Proposals Targeting for Climate Funding&rdquo; in BRAC Centre Inn, Dhaka, Bangladesh on 13 December 2014. The meeting was attended by 46 climate change focal points of various public and private agencies, researchers, engineers, economists, environmentalists, university faculty members, government officials, development workers, civil society actors, NGOs, community-based organizations (CBO), youth, and media personnel.\nWorkshop on &ldquo;Climate Change and Water Quality: Impact on Coastal Women and their livelihoods&rdquo;\nBangladesh Women and Water Network (BWWN) with the financial support of Bangladesh Water Partnership organized a half day long workshop on 27 September 2014 in BRDB Training Center, Maijdee Court, Noakhali. "International Conference on Water Resources in South Asia: Conflict to Cooperation (IC WRSA CC)\nIt was held in Dhaka on 4 and 5 January 2013. BWP was a co-organizer of the conference with Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) and Bangladesh Environmental Network (BEN). The purpose of this conference was to bring experts, activists, and stakeholders together to review the current state of water-related planning and management efforts and find out ways of raising cooperation to a higher level in order to protect and harness water resources of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers for the benefit of all coriparian countries.\nBuilding Climate Resilience in the Bangladesh Delta\nA consultation workshop on &ldquo;Building Climate Resilience in the Bangladesh Delta: Managing for Effective Water Solutions&rdquo; was held on 27 February 2013. The Honorable Minister for Water Resources Mr. Ramesh Chandra Sen MP was present as the Chief Guest. Mr.&nbsp; Md. Shahidul Hasan, President of Bangladesh Water Partnership chaired the inaugural session. The workshop focused on problem analysis of the coastal region of Bangladesh, sustainable management of Bangladesh delta, and objective setting of a pilot scheme.\nWater Week\nDr. K. Azharul Haq, Vice-President, BWP attended the Stockholm water week. He presented a paper on Launching the Delta Alliance Joint Program of Activities: Experiences from Bangladesh. In his paper he focused on the opportunities and challenges faces Bangladesh. Dr. M. Monowar Hossain, Executive Director, IWM was a designated discussant. He pointed out the dynamics of delta issues related to water management and protecting the ecosystem of the deltas was emerging as prime consideration for over all delta management.\nBangladesh Conducts National Consultation on Water in the Post-2015 Development Agenda: March 2013\nA National Consultation on Water in the Post-2015 Development Agenda organized by the Bangladesh Water Partnership was held on 30 March 2013 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. 52 participants from government and semi-government agencies, universities, research organizations, and NGOs involved in the water resources sector took part in the consultation. The findings from all the country consultations can be downloaded in the summary report&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.gwp.org/globalassets/global/gwp-sas_files/news-and-activities/national-stakeholder-consultations-on-water-2013.pdf\">\"National Stakeholder Consultations on Water: Supporting the post-2015 development agenda\".</a>\nNational Dialogue on Adaptive Approach Delta Plan and Innovation for Addressing Water Management Issues\nIn association with Bangladesh Water Partnership (BWP), the Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) organized a national dialogue on Adaptive Approach for Long Term Delta Plan and Innovation for Addressing Water Management Issues in Bangladesh on 28 September 2013 at the BRAC Centre, Dhaka.\nTraining on Climate Change and Emerging Challenges of Food Security\nA training program on Climate Change and Emerging Challenges of Food Security was organized by BWP and IWM from 24 to 25 April 2013 in Dhaka. The goal of the training was to cope with critical water challenges through partnerships. The training helped dissemination of knowledge on food security at the event of climate change impacts and the sharing of experience and professional networking of the participants from different organizations.\nConsultation on Sharing Experiences: Regional initiatives in the GBM Region\nAs invited by IUCN and nominated by GWP-SAS, Dr. K. Azharul Haq, Vice President, BWP participated in the consultation on Sharing Experiences: Regional Initiatives in the GBM Region held in Bangkok on 13 December 2013. Dr. Haq presented a paper on GWP&rsquo;s initiatives in the GBM basin to introduce water, food, and Eco-System Security. In his presentation, he described programs implemented by GWP-SAS to improve the governance of transboundary rivers to ensure water, food, and ecosystem security.\nApplication of IWRM Principles in Water Supply and Sanitation\nA round table discussion was organized on the Application of IWRM Principles in Water Supply and Sanitation by BWP in association with the Environment and Population Research Centre (EPRC) and DWASA on 29 December 2013 at Dhaka WASA."

"Study on the application of IWRM principles in the implementation of water supply and sanitation projects in DWASA\nBWP has completed a study on the application of IWRM principles in the implementation of water supply and sanitation projects in Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA). The goal of the study was to promote water as a key part of sustainable development. The study was conducted by Environment and Population Research Centre (EPRC) in January 2012. The five projects selected for the study included Sayedabad Water Treatment Project (Phase-II), Dhaka Water Supply Sector Development Project (DWSSDP), Emergency Rehabilitation and expansion of Water Supply System Project (EREWSSP), Dhaka Water Supply and Sanitation Project (DWSSP), and Tetuljhara Bhakurta Well Field Construction Project.\nCelebration of World Water Day\nThe government of Bangladesh celebrated World Water Day in all the 64 administrative districts of the country. Previously the celebration had been limited to a few large cities. For the first time, BWP acted as a cosponsor of this country-wide mega event. BWP also participated in the main celebrations, a workshop on &ldquo;Water &amp; Food Security&rdquo;.&nbsp;BWP along with Bangladesh Water Integrity Network (BAWIN), Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (BAPA) and NGO Forum also organized a &ldquo;Human chain&rdquo; which was formed in front of Press Club, Dhaka to highlight the importance of integrity in the water sector. \nWorkshop on Transparency &amp; Accountability in Water Supply in Dhaka City \nA workshop on &ldquo;Transparency and Accountability in Water Supply in Dhaka City: Challenges and Actions&rdquo; was organized by BAWIN on 26 May 2012 in Dhaka. BWP presented one of the two keynote papers. The paper focused on global context of water integrity, Bangladesh Government policies and challenges to water integrity, poor consumer services and way forward.\nWater Resources Management for Environmental-Friendly Development \nWorkshops and seminars were organized to observe the World Environment Day. BWP was the co-sponsor of the events held on 5 to 7 June 2012. Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) organized a seminar on &ldquo;Water Resources Management for Environmental Friendly Development&rdquo; on 6 June, 2012. BWP and Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) organized a seminar on &ldquo;Re-directive Development and Rio+20: Progress of Bangladesh&rdquo; on 7 June, 2012.\nConsultation meeting on &ldquo;Climate Change Adaptation in Water Management for Food Security \nPreparation of research outline by BWP under Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN) phase II completed in 2012. BWP was assigned to draft a policy brief to be completed by July 2012. It conducted a consultation meeting on &ldquo;Climate Change Adaptation in Water Management for Food Security: Recent developments in South Asia&rdquo;. Professionals from government and non-government organizations (NGOs) and universities participated in the meeting.\nTraining on &ldquo;Climate Change Adaptation&rdquo;\nTo increase awareness about key critical issues related to climate change challenges that Bangladesh is likely to face in the future, a training on &ldquo;Climate Change Adaptation&rdquo; was organized by GWP Bangladesh and Institute of Water Modeling (IWM), on 23-25 September 2012 in Dhaka. The training included a site visit to the Saidabad Surface Water Treatment Plant where participants learned about the treatment processes and long-term challenges related to the water supply to the megacity.\nGender Awareness and Networking on Integrated Water Resources Management at Basin Level \nGender equity and women&rsquo;s empowerment in water resources management is one of the cornerstones of the Dublin-Rio principles on which the GWP network is founded, and is accepted as one of the essential pillars to poverty eradication and sustainable development. To look at these issues, 63 participants attended a workshop on &ldquo;Gender Awareness and Networking on Integrated Water Resources Management at Basin Level&rdquo; on 28 November 2012. The workshop was organized by the Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS), Bangladesh Women &amp; Water Network (BWWN), and GWP Bangladesh in Shunamganj under the auspices of the Surma Area Water Partnership."

"Collaboration and Sharing Experience to Strengthen the Water Utility Network Activities \nBWP and Water Sector Project (WSP) of the World Bank organized this workshop at the World Bank office, Dhaka on 19 April 2011. The participants included the Mayor of Munshiganj, Gazipur, and Shatkhira Municipalities. Mr. Shahidul Hassan, President of BWP chaired the workshop. The workshop reviewed the Bangladesh Water Utility Network (BAWUN) of BWP and Urban Water Utility Network activities and discussed the critical issues of urban water supply.\nWorkshop on Arsenic Mitigation\nIn association with EPRC and Garnet-SA, BWP has organized a workshop on arsenic mitigation in Kalia Upazila, Narail district on 23 March 2011. Representatives of local government and NGO, school teachers and water management caretakers of EPRC drinking water points were the participants. The objectives of the workshop were to provide understanding about the existing drinking water condition and educate the people at grass root level about the arsenic mitigation options on climate change adaptation perspectives.\nInternational River Protection Day\nNOWZUAN, a local NGO and Halda Area Youth Forum with BWP support organized human chain, rally and meetings to observe International River Protection Day in Chittagong on 7 May 2011. Fisher community, students, journalists, civil society and NGOs staff were the participants.\nWorkshop in Coastal Region\nInitiative for Right View (IRV) and Bhairab River Basin AWP organized a workshop on &lsquo;Water Problem in South-west Coastal Region in Perspective of Climate Change&rsquo; in Khulna on 7 June 2011. BWP supported the initiative to build an effective network. \nStudy on Irrigation System\nThe Study on the Productivity of Land in Diverse Irrigation Systems in Bangladesh was completed in May 2011. The study was included in a 2010 work plan to assess the technical, institutional, and economical feasibility of these irrigation management systems with a developed questionnaire to ascertain the productivity of land with the financial support of BWP. \nAchievement of MDG Goals \nIn collaboration with Research, Training, and Management (RTM) International, a local consulting firm, BWP has carried out a study to assess the status of achievement of MDG goals in the water and sanitation sector. Household survey was undertaken in rural and urban areas in seven administrative divisions in the country. The data were analyzed to draw inference if Bangladesh would achieve MDG by 2015.\nIntegrated Management in Mining Sand\nA seminar on &lsquo;Importance of Integrated Management in Mining Sand from the Riverbeds of Bangladesh&rsquo; was conducted by SOUL (Save Our Urban Life) on August 24, 2011, with financial assistance from BWP. Mr. Shahidul Hasan, President, BWP chaired the seminar. Around 70 participants attended from government, non-governmental organizations, and print and broadcast media.\nUrban Flood Risk Management Framework for Dhaka City to Combat the Threat of Climate Change\nCEGIS supported by BWP has carried out a study on Urban Flood Risk Management Framework for Dhaka City to Combat the Threat of Climate Change. The study focused on the urban flooding in the northern part of the city as a result of climate change. It attempted to develop a concept note on Climate Resilient Urban Flood Risk Management Framework for Dhaka. In the study a flood risk management framework has been developed which include pre-flood prevention, risk mitigation and flood preparedness.\nWorkshop on &lsquo;Climate Change Information and Best Practices on Climate Change Adaptation\nA workshop on &lsquo;Climate Change Information and Best Practices on Climate Change Adaptation&rsquo; was held on 28 December 2011 at Dhaka. It was organized by CEGIS in association with BWP. The objective of the workshop was to disseminate climate change information and best practices on climate change adaptation in the southwestern part of Bangladesh.\nStudy on plumbing fixtures for conservation of water \nBWP has supported Mr. Abul Basher Khan, Water and Sanitation Specialist to carryout a study on plumbing fixtures for conservation of water. Piped water supply coverage in most of the cities in Bangladesh is significantly low. The study recommended that periodic maintenance and plumbing fixtures of the systems will contribute to control leakages in pipelines and early deterioration of pipes, fittings, pumps and wells.\nWater and Environmental Problems in Padma-Gorai Rivers\nA seminar on &lsquo;Water and Environmental Problems in Padma-Gorai Rivers: Role of Elected Representative from Local Government&rsquo; by Garai River AWP in cooperation with BWP. It was held on 29 September 2011 in Kushtia district and participated by government and NGOs officials, reporters and journalists. Prof. Dr. Anwarul Karim, Executive Director, Folklore Research Institute Bangladesh (FRIB) and Chairman, Gorai AWP chaired the seminar.\n&lsquo;Safe Water: Need &amp; Necessity&rsquo;\nA knowledge sharing meeting was held at Halda River Area on &lsquo;Safe Water: Need &amp; Necessity&rsquo;. In cooperation with a local NGO NOWZUWAN, BWP has organized the meeting on 28 July 2011 at Nari Unnayon Shokti (Women Development Force) in Hathazari upazila to motivate women about the importance of water conservation, river protection and pollution control. A knowledge sharing meeting was held at Halda River Area on &lsquo;Safe Water: Need &amp; Necessity&rsquo;. In cooperation with a local NGO NOWZUWAN, BWP has organized the meeting on 28 July 2011 at Nari Unnayon Shokti (Women Development Force) in Hathazari upazila to motivate women about the importance of water conservation, river protection and pollution control.\n&lsquo;Enhancing Effective Participation of Women through Water Policies of Bangladesh\nBangladesh Women and Water Network (BWWN) organized a seminar on &lsquo;Enhancing Effective Participation of Women through Water Policies of Bangladesh&rsquo; at Dhaka city on 10 October 2011 with BWP financial assistance. The participants were woman officials from government and non-government organizations."

2011

"Raised awareness to rehabilitate the Halda River in Bangladesh\nIn 2009, GWP Bangladesh and the Halda River Area Water Partnership began an awareness-raising program for improved management of water resources and better access to domestic and irrigation water supplies. Illegal occupation, land grabbing, indiscriminate pollution, and massive overfishing became a serious threat to the Halda River in Chittagong District. They organized meetings, workshops, and folk music soir&eacute;es to convince the local population that they should take action to save the river. Eventually, public pressure persuaded the government to implement measures leading to the restoration of the quality of Halda River water. One of the most important factors in the campaign was the role played by youth and women in the mass awareness campaigns."
